Thousands and Thousands of ingredients have already been tested and proven safe to use in cosmetics. However, companies are still popping the eyes out of bunnies and injecting chemicals in them to test the newest ingredient. These bunnies are not dead, they are very much alive and the companies are more concerned about their bottom line then what they are doing to these animals. According to The Law Dictionary animal cruelty is defined as the infliction of physical pain, suffering, or death upon an animal, when not necessary for purposes of training or discipline [thelawdictionary.org]. Rabbits and mice are not the only animals that are being used for cosmetic testing they use several types of animals anything from guinea pigs to monkeys.
The United State doesn’t require cosmetic testing on animals but they also don’t prohibit it. Currently there is a bill called The Humane Cosmetics Act, which has been presented to Congress that would prevent the use of animals for cosmetic testing. According to the Humane Society this bill would make it illegal to conduct or commission animal testing in the U.S. Also it will prohibit selling any products if the final product or any component was developed using animal testing [humanesociety.org]. If this bill were to pass it would make amazing stride to getting a world wide banned on cosmetic testing on animals. Israel and the 28 states of the European Union have already jumped aboard the Cruelty-Free bandwagon and banned the sale of newly animal tested cosmetics. This ban took place in March of 2013.
Now China on the other hand is the only major market that requires all cosmetics and ingredients of the cosmetics sold in their country to go through toxicological testing which is testing on animals. This has created a difficult situation for many beauty companies. Companies such as Loreal and Procter and Gamble want to sell to the China market but are afraid that they will upset the customers in areas that don’t agree with animal testing. Actually forcing several companies to refuse to sell their products in China due to the fact that they have a cruelty free motto and refuse to change for China’s laws. Animal rights groups have been petitioning for years to get China to change the law. In the recent months they have agreed to allow some items to be sold in the country but require that these items undergo vigorous risk and safety checks.
