Say No To Capital Punishment Essay

1898 words - 8 pages

“Capital punishment is as fundamentally wrong as a cure for crime as charity is wrong as a cure for poverty (Henry Ford).” Death is a natural event that will occur eventually in life. No one is meant to live forever and that is normal. However, no one living on Earth should determine who should die based on the mistakes an individual makes. Who has the right to tell when and where a person should die? People make mistakes each and every day due to the fact that we were not created to be perfect. An argument that has been discussed throughout the years is the issue with capital punishment. According to US, “A death penalty is the sentence of execution for murder and some other ...view middle of the document...

..For certain in prison is just not punishment enough." In a sense, I agree with Senator Robert Singer because I feel there are certain individuals who commit malicious crimes and are considered sick and should not be able to see the light of day ever again. People who kill just for their pleasures should be punished because they are harming individuals for reasons that are centered on selfishness. In order to eliminate these types of people completely, the solution would be to kill them, but is killing the criminal solving anything? A Prosecuting Attorney in Clark County, Indiana states “there are some defendants who have earned the ultimate punishment our society has to offer by committing murder with aggravating circumstances present. I believe life is sacred. It cheapens the life of an innocent murder victim to say that society has no right to keep the murderer from ever killing again. In my view, society has not only the right, but the duty to act in self-defense to protect the innocent." Victims of the crime, usually the family, receive closure knowing the person who has brought torture to their life is now gone. Victims will feel free and no longer have to live in fear. Professor Cass Sunstein of Chicago and Professor Adrian Vermeule of Harvard, two law professors, state in their Stanford Law Review article that “capital punishment may save lives. Those who object to capital punishment, and who do so in the name of protecting life, must come to terms with the possibility that failure to inflict capital punishment will fail to protect life (Vermeule, Adrian and Sunstein, Cass).” But how does the death penalty protect life? Death penalty does not bring life, but ends life. By killing people the population does not increase, but decreases. According to the Amnesty International, the U.S. is ranked fifth in the execution scale with 43 executions in 2011 (Spielmann, James Peter). Forty-three executions may not be huge, but once the executions are added to the other types of deaths in the U.S the number begins to increase. Yes, the death penalty lessens the crime between that criminal condemned, but does it affect other criminals from committing crimes? According to Robert Camus, , “to assert, in any case that a man must be absolutely cut off from society because he is absolutely evil amounts to saying that society is absolutely good, and no one in his right mind would believe this today.” However, what does it really solve? Crimes will be committed no matter what one individual receives as a punishment. Almost every criminal feels they will never get caught for a crime they commit and some criminals do not receive punishments for their crime. But this will not stop crimes for occurring because if a person wants to commit a crime then they will proceed to do it based on personal discussions and not on the punishment of others.
