Devon ManikaEnglish 1302Garry WilsonApril 8, 2014Public Schooling vs. Home schoolingHome schooling has shown a steady increase since 1984 where the numbers where 100,000 students to nearly 2 million home-schooled students today (Lyman par.3). Not that long ago, the thought of schooling children at home was almost unheard of and thought to be something that would be done in the pioneer days. They had no other way to educate their children. In 1969 John Holt, a veteran teacher in alternative style schools, and Raymond Moore, a former U.S. Department of Education employee provided the foundation for what some most will soon call one of the greatest leaps for race of better education. In the years since, home schooling has become more widely known and many people are taking into consideration the possibility of this untraditional form of elementary and secondary education. There are three different opinions on the matter of house schooling: There are people who believe that home schooling is the best form of education; there are those who believe that public school will provide the best education; and there are people who believe that private school provides a better education.There is a plethora of information as to why people support home schooling. Many believe that a student can get a quality education from the comforts of their home. Compared to a more traditional way of education like public or private school. A well-known belief that home schooled children are socially deprived, But researchers show that The home-educated are doing well, typically above average, on measures of social, emotional, and psychological development. Research measures include peer interaction, self-concept, leadership skills, family cohesion, participation in community service, and self-esteem. Brian D. Ray of the NHERI which holds research of the subject also adds the reason being is most likely due the daily activities done by the home-schooled. Homeschool students are regularly engaged in social and educational activities outside their homes and with people other than their nuclear-family members. They are commonly involved in activities such as field trips, scouting, 4-H; political drives, church ministry, sports teams, and community volunteer work. These children join in the activities and interact with their peers and yet they are not overwhelmed by them. Colleges and universities now are seeking those who have been homeschooled and are even offering scholarships to them; in part because of the superior social skills these children demonstrate#. They are taught to become caring individuals for other people by seeing older siblings care for them (Cloud par.16). Home scholars are really being prepared for the real word, contrary to what some may believe.
