Have you ever been treated unfairly? Well, in the book The Watsons go to Birmingham in 1963 they were in the middle of the civil rights movements, they were fighting to be treated equally. The main theme is stopping segregation here are three examples ,the Watson family couldn't go to the same school as whites, they couldn't use the same restrooms, they couldn't go to the same church in peace.
In the south, African Americans could not go to the same school as the white children. That made them mad because they were made equal. In the the book, The Watsons go to Birmingham, their cousins marched to have rights and to show that there should be no segregation between African Americans and whites. In the book ,The Watsons go to Birmingham it says “ White children often attended large, well equipped , modern schools while African American students went to one-room schoolhouses without enough books or teachers.”(207 -208) They ...view middle of the document...
” (pg 207) The law was forcing segregation on them and they could not use the same facilities.
Then, they could not go to church in peace. In the book someone planted a bomb on the church where Joey the younger sister was practising. In the book it says “ someone ran by and said that someone bombed Joeys church.” (pg 183) That was when Byron was going out the door and was talking to Kenny. There were a lot of people wounded in the bombing. “ In the unrest that followed the bombing , two African American children died.” (pg 209) This shows that some of the white people didn’t want them to go to church because they thought they were higher than them.
Finally, segregation is bad because it breaks the image law form the Bible. The image mandate says “Let us make man in our image (which is referring to God)..... be fruitful….fill the earth… subdue it…. rule over every living creature. (Genesis 1: 26,28.) This means that we should treat people equally because we were made equally in God's image, likeness and he made us. In the book, when the bomb went off some kids were killed when they didn't do anything wrong, they could not eat at the same restaurant or use the same restroom. That shows that segregation did happen and they did treat them disrespectfully. They strived for the law to be changed because they wanted to be treated equally.
In conclusion , in the book The Watsons go to Birmingham, in 1963 they were in the middle of the civil rights movements, they were fighting to be treated equally. The main theme is stopping segregation here are three examples ,the Watson family couldn't go to the same school as whites, they can not use the same restrooms, they could not go to the same church in peace. So how would you feel if you were in there place? The image mandate says that we were made in the same image and likeness as God planned. In the love mandate it says that we should treat others like how we would like to be treated. The mission mandate says that we should love everyone no matter if you like them or not. It basically it means that segregation is wrong because we should treat everyone fairly and equally because the Bible says that we should.
