Hiring for a supermarket can be difficult because there can be five people hired in the same day and only one is left at the end of six months. Supermarkets do not tend to pay high wages, starting out they typically pay minimum wage which causes people to get second jobs or find better paying ones. Most of the starting positions are occupied by teenagers so they are limited on availability and tend to leave when they go to college or when summer is ending. Interviewing applicants is a really good way to tell if that person is good for the job. This job needs someone upbeat, ambitious, and friendly. I will use a nondirective approach to interviewing the five applicants (Bohlander & Snell, 2007, 6). This will allow me to ask questions and let them answer without me influencing them. The list of questions I would ask is:1.Why did you leave your last job?2.Do you like working with people?3.Are you going to school?4.What would make you qualified for this job?5.Where do you see yourself in five years?The applicant will be able to answer these questions openly and expand on them if they would like. It will help me get to know them better and see their personality while they are talking. After interviewing five people for the job I found two that are really great and have very uplifting personalities. The final tool in the selection process is drug testing.Drug testing is a way to ensure a drug free environment for the workplace and I feel that it is the final step for hiring employees. Since drug testing can be costly I would only send the final candidates to be tested for drugs. In some cases some companies will not drug test their employees because they do not feel it is necessary such as Hewlett-Packard, Cisco, and Starbucks Coffee Company (Bohlander & Snell, 2007, 6). I feel that working in a supermarket around people and moving carts where cars are always driving through the parking lots it is very important to test for drug use. If both candidates pass the drug test then they both will be hired.The most important selection tools in the hiring process are the applications and the interviews. I feel that the applications help eliminate the candidates not qualified for the job and help save time finding the qualifying candidates for the job. When finding the few candidates that are qualified for the job it is best to have a way of finding out which ones should be considered for the job, which is why the interview is the core way to find out if the person is as good as they are on paper. With an interview the hiring manager can see the applicant's personality and ask them questions to find out if they possess the skills for the job they are applying for.Some jobs require more selection tools and longer processes to hire that perfect employee. A job that would require such time and process is Primary School teacher which is what I have selected for my final project. Schools are very careful for who they hire to teach children so they are going to be detailed in their interviewing process. First they will require a resume and a teaching portfolio. Some schools will require an application to be filled out so they can have it on file.
