In middle childhood, around the age of 7, children start to develop a self – esteem. The development of self -esteem is important because it determines the way a person views ones-self. The Self- esteem formed in middle childhood changes by the time an individual reaches adulthood. There are many longitudinal studies that have been done on the development of self – esteem. The third point that they studied was the difference in self-esteem between males and females. The researchers predicted that gender would be a factor in the difference self-esteem differences.
The “Cherish Yourself” study had 4,532 participants that were from an ongoing German longitudinal study, which began in 2002 and focused on educational and psychological condition. Its main focus was to see the outcome of participants that left high school and either went to work, or went out to study at a university. The participants were recruited randomly for 149 upper secondary schools in Germany. The first assessment took place between February and May of 2002. There were two trained interviewers that were administering all the material to students. The students were in their senior year of high school and the mean average of age was 19.60. Slightly more than half of the sample was female (55%), and most of them came from a traditional family including both biological parents. Three additional assessments were conducted about two years apart from each other. The second assessment was completed two years after the participants graduated from high school. The student that participated in the additional assessments were the students that signed a consent form during their first assessment, which resulted in 60% of participants. The follow up assessments were conducted in a questionnaire that took about two hours and the participants were reward with between twelve and eighteen dollars every time they participated.
The self- esteem scale in the first assessment was completed by 4,471 individuals, the second assessment was completed by 2,310 individuals, the third assessment was completed by 1,908 individuals, and in the fourth assessment it was completed by 1,869 individuals. The researchers compared the participants who completed all four assessments to those that drop out of the study. Participates that completed all four assessments were mostly all female and lived in a traditional household. Each of the four assessments included measures on self- esteem, Big Five personality, structural characteristic and demographics. Self – esteem was measured using the German version of a self-descriptive Questionnaire, which included four items, and a scale from one to four points. The Big Five personalities were measured using the German version of NEO-Five-Factor- Inventory (NEO-FFI) personality inventory, which also included a one to four point scale. The structural characteristics were measured during the second assessment by probing into the participants living status, educational status, and relationship status. Individuals were asked if they lived at home or if they have moved out, if they were students or not, and if they had a partner or not. The demographic measurements were surveyed during their first assessment when the participants reported information on their gender, age, and family situation.
