Self Reflective Paper

This semester in English 1302 my perspective on writing has immensely changed. In the previous semester I struggled and nearly passed by a hair because I did not clearly understand the objectives that were given. In this semester, my mistakes had to be fixed. Although it was a process, I finally got around to clearly understanding what the objectives were for English 1302 and how to apply them to my papers for this course.
The first objective that is given in the syllabus is to meet the requirement of 20 pages total by the end of the course. Writing requires using a number of methods and styles. One of the styles that I admire the most and find easiest to write is argument. Arguing is something that most people do on a daily basis, and in this course on of our assignments was to argue a topic of our choice. We were to have a position in the paper, and opposing argument, and a rebuttal. In paper 1, argumentative style is shown by arguing about why paragraphs 14 and 15 of Martin Luther King Jr’s Letter from Birmingham jail had an emotional significance. We also had to use descriptive and self-expressive methods. We had to describe what King felt while writing the letter, and his reasons for responding to the Clergy men’s letter. It is in some ways difficult to write and argument without opinion, which is why self-expression in present in my essay on King, it is there to show my argument and why I believed that those certain paragraphs show the most significance.
While writing papers for this course I took my readings and research very seriously. Good academic reading for a paper can make a significant difference in the way your paper is portrayed. For Paper 2, I checked out 3 academic books, read numerous amounts of scholarly journal articles, and searched for as many sources as I could. Being able to get good academic sources for work is a factor that is very helpful when it comes to supporting the argument you are portraying in your papers. Although it is not possible to put every sentence you read in your sources word for word, explaining what you read in your own words can lead you to go into greater depth and also possibly lead you to an even greater argument.
We only had a small number of group work during this course. It was mainly discussion boards and peer review workshops, and although I am not one who enjoys working in groups I found that it did help me improve as a writer. The advice that was given to me by my peers was very helpful, there comments showed me the little mistakes that I had constantly made but never seen.
