Source Evaluation Three: Zitkala-Sa American Indian Stories
Zitkala-Sa was first published in 1900. Because she was raised after the Native Americans had been stripped of their original lands, Quakers sought to assimilate them and give them what they thought was an opportunity. At age 8, after being convinced by a friend that had spoken of the missionaries as though they were portrayed in some holy light and headed to the Promised Land, she headed to the East because “I like big red apples, and I want to ride on the iron horse!” (Zitkala-Sa, 1921.) ”) Her goal is to teach them to treat Native Americans as equals, without fully attempting to remove all of their heritage. She also thinks that they should be comforted instead of mocked and gazed at is if they are Animals.
Furthermore, Zitkala-Sa experience led to her spirit being sabotaged, broken, and lost. As she states, “I cried aloud, shaking my head all while I felt the cold blades of scissors against my neck, and heard them gnaw off one of my thick braids then I lost my spirit. Since the day I was taken from my mother, I had suffered extreme indignities. People had stared at me, I had been tossed in the air like a wooden puppet. And now my long hair was shingled like a cowards in my anguish, I moaned for my mother, but no one came to comfort me. Not a soul reasoned quietly with me, as my mother use to do. For now I was only one of the many little animals driven by a herder.” (Zitkala-Sa, 1921).
In some aspects, Modern values promote the understanding of what is expressed as a grave injustice within this literature. America is now viewed as a blending pot of cultures and some Americans are well versed on Native American history, literature, and customs. However, at the same time, prejudice natures still exist. If one watches peter pan even modern day, one of the main quotes of the movie is “Squaw no dance, Squaw gettum firewood".
