Sensation is the process of receiving stimuli from the outside world to create sensory experiences of taste, smell, vision, touch, hearing, and many others. Perception is the process by which the brain organizes, interprets, and integrates the information brought to it. Perception helps us understand better the sensation. Sensation and Perception helps us improve our chances for survival. In the case of animals, they must be able to sense quickly when a predated is approaching. Without sensation and perception we would not be protected from any kind of danger.
All of our sense organs are specialized cells called sensory receptors that detect stimulus information and transmit it to sensory nerves and the brain. These receptors convert sources of sensory stimuli into neural impulses the brain can use to create sensations. We can find our sensory receptors in the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and ...view middle of the document...
This example shows us that we all have different thresholds.
Bellow our threshold of conscious awareness there is subliminal perception. According to James Vicary, an advertising executive, “announce that he was able to increase popcorn and soft drink sales by secretly flashing the words “EAT POPCORN” and “DRINK COKE” on a movie screen in a local theater (Weir, 1984).” Even though the information was bellow the conscious threshold it can influence our behavior. Sometimes we see on TV screens stuff that we are not interested but those things get stored in our brain and later we are going to remember them and it will influence our behavior.
Before the difference is detected, psychologists investigate the degree of the degree of difference that must exist between two stimuli. This difference is called the difference threshold. According to Weber’s law, “the amount you must change a stimulus to detect a difference is given by a constant fraction or proportion (called a constant) of the original stimulus.” For example you are holding a bag full of apples, I am adding one apple at a time, in the moment you feel a change in weight, that difference between the weight of the apples before I added more apples and the amount of apples after I added it, is the difference thresholds.
Perception and sensation differ from each other. Through sensation we feel things and through perception we give a meaning/interpretation to sensation. Sensation helps us see, smell, touch, hear and so on. We are protected through sensation from a lot of danger. Without the sensation we can’t leave a human life. Perception helps us realize what surrounds us really mean. We see new and old things every day and we get used to them sometimes fast and sometimes slower. Perception helps us to find a meaning to all the things we explore. Without perception we would not be able to enjoy this world and find the real meaning of this world. Finally, we need both sensation and perception to live a life where we are controlled by nature.
