Students in the United States should be required to take sex education classes that promote abstinence instead of safe sex. Why is sex education prominent than abstinence? Focusing on abstinence will lead to a better outcome in life, while sex education has major disadvantages. Abstinence is the way to go, because the best safe sex is no sex.
According to the Macmillan Dictionary, sex education is a system of medical and pedagogical measures for inculcating in parents, children, adolescents and young adults correct attitudes towards sex. In Mississippi one of the requirements for graduation is taking a Health class, which teaches students about the dangers of having sex. Sex education classes are suppose to teach us how to have a safe sexually life outside of marriage. While abstinence is voluntary forbearance especially indulgence of sexual intercourse, Webster-Merriam. Although our schools preaches safe sex those class have not decrease the pregnancy all our schools. In face the lack of teach students how to use condoms properly, should be one of the reason schools promote abstinence over safe sex.
Instructing students on how to have a safe sex life is even against certain if not all religions. Catholics and Christians even frown upon the teachings of what sex is to their children. They feel sex is for the couples that are married and should not be talked about outside of those couples’ bedroom. Some religions even find it a sin to mention the word sex in public. Sex has always been a wonderful act in God’s eyes, and the best place to enjoy it is in a marriage. A sexual relationship with your husband or wife is a time for rejoicing, laughter, encouragement, enjoyment, and becoming one (Speck), and adolescents whose parents have strong religious beliefs could cause tremendous confusion in the school.
One of the disadvantages of teaching sex education is the fact that parents want to be the ones who teach their child about what sex is. They may have a different approach were as the teacher could go in and teach the students misleading information or in some cases being too blunt, which can also cause confusion. Not all parents want their adolescents learning about sex from someone else. Most parents have a certain way they want to sit down and talk to their child and other parents might want to preach abstinence and not safe sex. Often some teachers stray away from telling their students that sex is a progression.
Sex begins with kissing and then goes to French kissing. After that they began to touching with their clothes on, and then the clothes come off and the end result is often intercourse (Speck).
