Sex Offender Laws and Wrongful Convictions
The laws for sex offenders should be changed for many reasons, this is a very controversial subject, and tempers flare easily.
Because of the plethora of opinions on this subject, making it hard to determine what is right and what is wrong.
The very same government sending teenagers to school together as a group and teaching them about safe sex, Is the same government that is bringing charges against them for practicing sex: Not only that but they are labeling them as sex offenders for the rest of their lives’. How confusing this must be to the young people of America today. So many young people are finding this out the hard way; can you imagine being accused of a sex offense for being with someone of your own age group, your peers? Consensual sex by teenagers experimenting is an activity that is labeled by most states as sexual assault, statutory rape and child sexual abuse. A felony crime in most states and is also accompanied by registering as a sex offender the rest of their life.
For people Growing up in the 60s, it’ is a good thing these laws were not in effect because most of the young people being accused today would have never been born. because their parents would either still be in jail or unable to afford to have children due to the fact that a sex offender cannot find a home to live in, but couldn’t afford one if they could because nobody will hire a person labeled a sex offender no matter what the situation, clearly a violation of human rights. .” (MoralOutrage.net July 27th 2007 Laurie Peterson)

Federal Legislation expanded the release of criminal records reports under the fair credit reporting act (15 USC 1681, et seq.) this is used by employers and has resulted in a major loss of jobs across the United States for young offenders, not to mention federal laws like the Adam Walsh act and the Wetterling act; that mandated long registration periods and the online posting of information including pictures, current addresses under the posting ‘Sex Offender and /or crimes against children, thus resulting in a social stigma and shame for young people across America. Not to mention the cost of registration for the child with no job or real place to call home.
Our laws seem to have taken away the true threat to society, the grown adult that actually has sexual intercourse with children, the true predator. They are the true offenders and our young people are being grouped in with them and in many cases forcing our children to live with them at times. Therefore causing more emotional damage then has already been inflicted upon them.
