For some people, sex is lusty, dirty, forbidden, pleasurable and sweet all at the same time. The thrill of having sex without being married is a rush for some people. Various people engage in sexual activities with multiple partners either one at a time or at the same time. These sexual partners may not even be opposite sex and can end up being the same sex. However, one thing that ties all of this together is the idea of having sex without getting married. By engaging in this activity is a sin. By giving into the temptation of having sex and engaging in this dirty desire is usually associated with the Devil. Lust in general is one of the emotions that are associated with the Devil.
Hieronymus Bosch, one of the most famous painters that illustrated moral and religious concepts painted several depictions of the Devil wrapping their hand around different woman. One of his most famous paintings is called the Hell also known as the Garden of Earthly Delights. This painting depicts the Devil wrapping their hands around a woman. The woman is seen looking at her reflection. The small oval mirror could represent her being bare by exposing her soul and body spiritually to the Devil. Touching the female around her chest sexualizes the Devil in a physical sense. In addition, there is a person in a bubble trying to grab the other person in the bubble with them. This could symbolize the fact that the person fully in the bubble is trying to aid the other person who is half in half out to join him. The Devil has the person in the bubble, which is now his follower, trapped in a bubble and is trying to tempt the other person to fully come in instead of being undecided. The Devil is portrayed like a bird-like figure as well and is seen eating a human being. In addition, all the people that are in the painted are naked and the Devil exposes them by sexualizing their bodies in various forms.
This association of the women being sexualized in this painting could refer to many things. One of the things it could refer to is fact that women could be easily influenced by the Devil sexually. Women were considered weak so the Devil could easily claim a women’s body and take over their soul spiritually. Another reference is that just like how the Devil uses deception and trickery in The Book of Genesis, the Devil uses the same concept in this painting by tricking the various people here. Both Adam and Eve were naturally bare and in this painting all the people are bare as well. In addition, Hieronymus Bosch also incorporates homosexuality in his paintings. For this painting, the Devil sexualizes the male by inserting an instrument through his anal. Another depiction is the coins coming out of a man’s anal. Homosexuality is a big debate in church. Even today it is a big problem where marriages are concerned.
