William Shakespeare, also known as the Bard of Stratford, is a widely known playwriter. He wrote many plays, performing them as well. A writer and actor, Shakespeare was a magnificent man who lived during the Renaissance period.
With no facts or evidence, William Shakespeare, the third eldest in his family, was believed to be born on April 23, 1564. Including himself, his parents, John and Mary Shakespeare, had a total of eight children- four girls and three boys. Their first two children, Joan and Margaret, both died from the lethal Bubonic Plague. Luckily, William didn’t contract the sickness and grew up as the oldest in the family. For example, “Hamlet,” his longest play, is 4,042 lines long, while “The Comedy of Errors” is only 1,787 lines long. While writing these plays, Shakespeare often created his own words. Overtime, he had invented about 1,700 words. Some of these interesting words include assassination, cater, elbow, radiance, and summit. In total, his vocabulary consisted of 17,000 to 34 ,000 words. This is a lot, considering the average person only knows 15,000 words!
Shakespeare wrote two types of plays- tragedies and comedies. Many famous tragic plays include “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet,” and “Julius Caesar.” These plays often include depressing suicides or deaths at the end of the book. For example, in “Romeo and Juliet,” Romeo and Juliet both commit suicide. During “Hamlet,” Hamlet, is stabbed by a poisonous sword. In “Julius Caesar,” Cassius and Titinius, two of the main characters, both commit suicide. These stories are very devastating and may leave you teary-eyed, but William also wrote comedies. Some famous comedies included “As you Like It,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and “The Taming of the Shrew.”
