High school should be shorter, as in the school day, not the length of the school year. Maybe not so many students would drop out if they had to spend less hours in school. More students would benefit from a shorter school day than they would a longer school day, anyhow. Yes, it gives the teachers less time to teach, but it gives the students a better chance to learn the little material that is being taught. If the school day was shorter, the students would have more time to study and participate in extracurricular activities, and the teachers would be less stressed.

For some teachers, grading papers is a breeze, but for other teachers it is a difficult task that requires a lot of time. “After the first or second year, the workload becomes more manageable, but the hardest -- and, to me, most stressful and distressing -- part of the job remains: grading students’ work. It’s the part of the job that… induces the greatest uncertainty, discomfort, and angst” (Tierney). Teachers will not have to complain about grading papers if they had more time to do so. Students deserve to know what their grades are in their classes; a shorter school day will give students this right.
On the other hand, other people would like for school to become longer. They believe that making school longer would give students more time to understand the material that they are being taught. “Chicago kids deserve a bright future… but they were never going to get it with the shortest day in the country” (Lasevoli). They feel that it would give the students a better opportunity to pass all of their classes. Making school longer would simply put more stress on the teachers; they would be pressured to finish grading papers and everything else that teachers have to have accomplished within a certain time frame. If the teachers are stressed, the students are not going to have a great day....
