Should animals be used for research in cosmetic industry?

Animal testing is widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. These experiments can cause pain to the animals involved or reduce their quality of life in other ways. Animal experimenters are aware of this problem and agree that the testing should be made as humane as possible. While this practice has been followed for years now, some people still strongly believe that it is a cruel act and should be permanently banned. Supporters say it is wrong for people to remove an animal from its natural environment and to interfere with its existence.

The topic of research on animal testing in the cosmetic industry has long been a controversial and prominent topic. While some believe that it is necessary to test the products on animals before trying them on humans, the others stand by their support for the animals. Even though many major cosmetic companies have claimed to discontinue the practice due to new alternative ways, it still continues around the world. Companies like L’Oreal, Lancôme, Max Factor, Sally Hansen still continue to use animal testing on their cosmetics where as companies such as Avon, Estee Lauder, The Body Shop, Clinique are known to be against animal testing. Animal testing for cosmetic purposes has been banned in Europe and it is also prohibited to market the cosmetic products whose ingredients have been tested on animals whereas in the United States of America testing of cosmetic products is legal provided that the animals are treated in an ethical manner.
