In the pockets of most students attending high school today, there can be found a unique gadget called a cellphone; it has access to all the information mankind has to offer and more including various forms of social networking and communication. Cellphones first came about in the 1980’s as large heavy objects that had an antenna and could only make calls. Since then cellphones have steadily advanced. This feat can undeniably be considered a marvel of modern society. Cellphones are tools that are used for efficiency of everyday life as well as convenience, although these tools seem to be a helpful aid in productivity, evidence backing such claims could not be found without faults. With the popular emergence of cellphones with internet capabilities and large amounts of digital space, educational opportunities seem to be at a peak and with these advantages in education also come disadvantages which could pose a risk for academic fallacy and also a number of scandalous activities.
Cellphones can be used to aid in studying; they could provide much needed assistance during a midnight study session in which a student may need to remember massive amounts of information for an upcoming test. A cellphone which can be used to help a student study can also be used to help a student cheat very easily since the correct information can be saved on the phone, or it can also be located very easily on the internet. Although many schools have placed a campus-wide ban on cellphones, students have the skills necessary to surreptitiously use them to their advantage. A case such as this has been documented in New York where a group of seventy students participated in the sharing of text messages that included photos of test pages. In Long Island, students with the aid of cellphones, created fake IDs to impersonate other students taking the SAT. Such academic fallacy is often accredited for and slips past watchful eyes, undetected. Rigorous cellphone checks during important test should be put in place to help eliminate cheating scandals (Baker).
