Donald Remy, the NCAA's general counsel and vice president for legal affairs says "athletes attend college as a privilege and are provided the unique opportunity to earn a degree and at the same time compete in intercollegiate athletics. That opportunity is incongruent with the notion of being an employee” (Cooper). A recent debate in the sports world suggests that, like professional athletes, collegiate athletes should be paid for their participation in sports. A number of factors lead many people to believe that collegiate level athletes should be seen as wage earners. Athletes should not be paid to play at the collegiate level because they are provided scholarships which pay for their schooling, it would eliminate the recruiting process, and if they were paid it would be unfair for high school athletes not to be paid to play as well.
A majority of college athletes are given scholarships, even if only partial, to contribute toward paying for their schooling. Student athletes receive ample pay in the form of scholarships (Schneider). College athletes are considered amateurs, not employees or professional athletes, and therefore do not have the right to be paid to play. The money provided in athletic scholarships contributes to a student’s payment for tuition, room and board, fees, books, and other expenses associated with college education (Mitchell). The average athletic scholarship is $15,000 a year, more than enough to pay for most public colleges (“How Do Athletics”). Along with these factors, most schools pay for the athlete’s food and hotel rooms while at away games, as well as their uniforms, logo wear, etc. Although college athletes aren’t paid outright, they certainly earn sustainable compensation for their abilities in other forms.
If college athletes were indeed granted the opportunity to be paid to play, the recruiting process would be eliminated. Commitment decisions would become based solely on money, more so than they are now. The quality of a school’s academic substance would be totally disregarded in the student athlete’s decision.
