High Schools' Should Make Condoms Available to StudentsOne of today's growing arguments is whether or not condoms should be distributed in high schools. Should schools take the responsibility and make it easy for teens to obtain a condom? Should schools encourage safe sex, or only push for abstinence? These are some of the questions parents and for me being a parent I have to ask myself in when deciding for or against condoms in high schools. And by looking around my own environment and what is plainly to see many teenagers are having sex and having life altering results such as contracting STDs and becoming a teenage parent. Thus, I feel condoms should be distributed in high schools.Distributing condoms in high schools is a controversial topic that deals with the high percentage of young teenagers having sex, and what is the best way to protect them from getting pregnant and getting diseases. Responsible adults can preach about abstinence and hope that a youth is listening, or society can deal with reality, knowing teens are having sex and teach them how to protect themselves. I am an aunt to a teenage mother, it is sad to say that since her parents did not speak or listen to her regarding boys, schools having no resources and she having sex by the age 14 she had a life altering change because she had her 1st child by the age of 15. This was a very sad day for me since I know her life would never be the same. She would not finish school, have a decent job or basically just rely on the state to take care of her and her child. Just look around our society and you will see someone like my niece. This is why I feel that condoms should be available in high schools. Not only that teenagers are getting pregnant there is a rise in STDs amongst them. Just last month I read on the internet In The National Coalition To Support Sexuality Education, it was said, "More than half of American teenagers have had sexual intercourse and face significant sexual health risks. Each year, over one million teenagers become pregnant, and one in seven teenagers contract an STD." This is a scary fact that should be telling the public something. Children are having children, and the disease rate keeps growing, and getting to younger ages. This is one example, among many, of why condoms should be available at schools.I know by being a parent and speaking to other parents we don't want condoms in our children's schools as a way of condoning sex. But, if a teenager, or anyone, decides that they want to have sex, they are going to have sex. If there is a condom available to them, they will be much more likely to use one. For young teenagers, 14 and 15, going to the drug store and purchasing condoms can be very embarrassing. In a lot of cases, to avoid embarrassment, the children will just use nothing at all. I say this because, I have done this myself. But, by having condoms in schools, it would not be to condone or suggest having sex, but it would suggest to the teens that if...
