Through His chosen prophets and apostles in a statement called “The Family: A Proclamation to the World”, the Lord has declared that "marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children." In today's society, we find the traditional family unit under attack in the form of same sex unions. These "marriages" are not in tune with the will of our Heavenly Father and certainly play no role in His eternal plan of happiness. The result of these practices will be immorality in the home, degradation of our society, and a weaker nation. As President Benson stated in General Conference of 1982, "Marriage [between a man and a woman] is the rock foundation, the cornerstone, of civilization. No nation will ever rise above its homes."
"Laws legalizing so-called “same-sex marriage” do not change God’s law of marriage or His commandments and our standards concerning it. We remain under covenant to love God and keep His commandments and to refrain from serving other gods and priorities—even those becoming popular in our particular time and place." (Dallin H.Oaks Conference 2013) I had never taken the time to really think about what it meant to serve other Gods. I always just assumed that it literally meant to not worship people or items that said they were God. When writing this paper I was able to gain a greater understanding of this commandment. When it says to refrain from serving other gods that can mean laws, or ideas that the world deems to be true.
Satan has always attacked the family, knowing that the basics of testimony and happiness are found in Christ-centered homes. Our society has gradually allowed his influence into our beliefs and values to the point where what was once considered evil is now openly accepted and even applauded. The acceptance of gay marriage is just the latest of these attacks. Many today are trying to pass laws that will force us to recognize these unions as valid and allowed. However, the Lord will never accept nor allow this type of behavior. In his most recent talk at General Conference, Elder Dallin H. Oaks stated, "man’s laws cannot make moral what God has declared immoral." In other words, man's belief that passing an earthly law to allow these practices makes it acceptable in heaven, is sorely mistaken.
The Lord expects each of us as bearers of the truth to stand up for what is...
