Is it possible for a countries number one cash crop to be illegal? The answer is simply yes. In the United States of America marijuana took over corn as our countries number one cash crop and it's very illegal. Marijuana is by no means a new drug it has been around for a very long time. It has been around since the days of colonial America when Washington and Jefferson grew hemp. It wasn't until the 1930's that the government really became interested in this very questionable plant called marijuana. The government began researching this peculiar plant and decided that it wasn't appropriate for people to be smoking it. This new idea of thinking by the government brought about the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. This was by no means the end of the drug. Twenty some years later in the 1960's and 1970's marijuana was back. These two decades are often associated with hippies, music, and drugs (mainly marijuana). They get high then stop. But there a lot of people who chain smoke cigarettes. This doesn't mean that marijuana isn't bad for you. It is proven that, in fact, marijuana is very bad for you but so are alcohol and cigarettes. So why is it that those substances are legal and marijuana isn't? Many people believe that pot is considered the gateway drug and if you try it then you are more likely to try harder drugs such as cocaine or heroine. There may be research that proves this point but they can do research like that for anything. They could prove that people who drink coffee are much more likely to try cocaine then those who don't drink coffee. It's not like all pot smokers are drug dealing, violent, corrupt people many of them just want to relax a little bit. What is the difference between a person who comes home after a hard days work...
