Personal mission statement as described by Stephen Covey is our personal constitution, the set of rules and values that will serve as a guideline throughout our entire life. It is one of the most important things one should have established for himself. Nevertheless, time to time, personal mission can mislead you to happiness. Our life purpose works hand-in-hand with your values and, the two combined, give us the steady belief in what we stand for. Personal mission helps us to reach success and accomplish our goals, however we need to be careful when identifying our personal mission, because sometimes it may concern not only us but also the people we love and care about. Therefore, even though personal mission statement provides you clarity and gives you a sense of purpose, it should not be valued more than your safety or the safety of your relatives.
Personal mission statement should be identified in a way that by following it, you will not cause any harm to yourself or people who surround you. To be more precise, it would be worthy to mention the example of Horakova. She had her personal mission identified, and was guided by it. Nevertheless in addition to the mission that she chose for herself she also had a mission to be a good parent for her 16 year old daughter. Horakova died defending what she thought was right, however can we tell that this was the right decision to make? She left her young daughter all alone, without thinking about her future. To better illustrate the importance of this example, it should be mentioned that here we deal with a situation when personal mission was considered to be more important than personal happiness.
