Should Pesticide Use Be Banned On The Island
Today’s Island is not like it was years ago. Before the spraying of toxic pesticides on the Island, many farmers used natural agents to kill off nasty pests in their farms. Now, pesticide use has increased tremendously over the years and caused many things on the island to be harmed. These harmful chemicals, should be banned and hopefully replaced by a safer alternative. It wasn’t until in the mid 1950’s where pesticides started to pose a harm on the environment, wildlife, and most of all, the people.

With these consequences, clearly pesticide usage is not very safe to our environment.
Environment Canada continues to allow pesticide usage in Prince Edward Island, and continues to take action in reducing risks (Environment Canada). Even though pesticides have been damaging the Earth and its environment, there are living things that have been affected as well. Wildlife safety is another major problem when dealing with pesticides. Not only do these pesticides kill pests, but numerous different insects, organisms, and mammals live in their own habitat very closely to where these farmers are spraying their crops, causing harm. McDaniel University posted an article stating that “with specific application, only 0.1% - 5% of the pesticides kill the targeted pest” (McDaniel). That means that there are numerous other insects and organism that have died unnecessarily due to pesticides. Bigger animals are also effected as well, especially animals who live in their natural habitat close to the area where pesticides are sprayed, these animals can eat, inhale, and absorb the chemicals into their bodies (Labchuk).
