For several years now, healthier food has been a rising concern among schools across the nation. In the United States alone, 19,700,000 students receive free or reduced school lunches. Two problems with school food is the growing obesity among students and the many health risks that go along with unhealthy food. But with a well balanced meal provided, students will increase concentration, improve academic performance, and stay healthy and strong. Therefore, schools should make lunches healthier. The first reason school food should be made healthier, is the problem with obesity. Many studies have shown students who eat school food tend to be more overweight. According to a survey from the National Health and Nutrition Examination, “Since 1980, obesity among children and adolescents aged 2 – 19 has almost tripled. “ Along with obesity, major health issues can become a serious problem such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart diseases, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and could even lead to death. “Obesity is now becoming the single biggest and totally preventable health issue that drives up the cost of healthcare.” (Children Obesity Foundation) Healthy food aids in the prevention of obesity. Another attribute of eating healthy, is increased concentration and academic performance.
Increased concentration and academic performance are the second reasons for healthier foods in school. Focusing on the type of food you eat will help your concentration. Eating healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods low in saturated fat can effect much of the body. Vegetables help brain cells grow and function correctly.
