It seems that school is one of the most controversial topics in the world. Should cell phones be allowed in the classrooms? Should the students be allowed to eat during class? Should all students get laptops? But more importantly, should uniforms be required in public schools? Across the globe, school districts have been fighting for or against the uniform requirement policy. For years, this has been a huge debate. When it really comes down to it though, public schools should require students to wear uniforms because statistics has shown that uniforms will help to improve academic performance, reduce behavioral issues, and improve social environments.

An Alabama high school reported that after having required uniforms incidents involving drugs and guns decreased by almost half (Konheim-Kalkstein). Not only that but a Colorado High School reported in 1999 that since the uniform policy was instated in 1994 the crime rate dropped by 91%, school suspensions dropped by 90%, sex offenses went down by 96% and incidents of vandalism went down 69%. (Glazener) That is no coincidence.

Movies like “Mean Girls” may exaggerate the idea of bullying but they definitely have the right idea. Many high schoolers resent going to school only because of the social situation they are in. Some may say that uniforms will not change the social environment or that the social environment has to do with race and gender, not clothing, but according to many researchers having uniforms will put all the students on neutral ground that makes building relationships much easier and less intimidating (The Variable Dress Code). In a Georgia Pre-school a small child reported that she never had any friends because her clothes were hand-me-downs instead of the brand new clothes her classmates got from their upper-class parents (Shellenbarger). Wearing uniforms will not completely remove bullying but it is proved to dramatically decrease it throughout the schools.
