Should We Consider Distance Education? Essay

In a context of rapid technological change and changing market conditions there is growing support for the claim that, the American, European and even Turkish educational system is challenged with ample and day by day increased educational opportunities with less budget required when you compare it face to face education or what we called as traditional education. Many educational based institutions, universities and courses are trying to answer this challenge by their own developing distance education or e-learning programs. So it is time to define what distance learning is; at the most basic level, distance education takes place when a teacher and students are separated by physical distance, and technology such as internet based voice, video, data, and print, often in concert with face-to-face communication. On logical grounds, there is no compelling reason to argue that these types of programs can provide students, adults with a chance at an education, reach those disadvantaged by limited time, physically at a distance or physical disability, and update the knowledge base of workers at their places of work.
So like everyone you can ask yourself if distance education effective enough? and if distant students learn as much as students receiving traditional face-to-face instruction at their educational institutions? Researches comparing distance education to traditional face-to-face instruction indicates that teaching and studying at a distance can be as effective as traditional instruction, when proper methods and technologies used are implemented, and be aware of the fact that there is student-to-student interaction, and in a timely matter teacher-to- student feedback.

Then lets come to the point of how distance education delivered to the customers; as you might guess a wide range of technological alternatives are available to the distance educator. The first one is by voice - instructional audio tools include the interactive technologies of telephone, audio conferencing, and short-wave radio. The second one is video - Instructional video tools include images like slides, moving images, and real-time video. The third one is data - computers send and receive information electronically. For this reason, the term "data" is used to describe this broad category of instructional tools. Computer applications for distance education are varied and include: Computer-assisted instruction - uses the computer as a self-contained teaching machine to present individual lessons. Computer-managed instruction - uses the computer to organize instruction and track student records and progress. Computer-mediated education describes computer applications that facilitate the delivery of instruction. Examples include electronic mail, fax, real-time computer conferencing, and World-Wide Web applications.
