De er uenige om hvem som var den rettmessige arvtaker etter Muhammed. Sjia-islam mente det var profetens fetter og svigersønn, Ali. Mens sunni-islam er enige med hvordan det skjedde. Der hans sentrale følgesvenn, Abu Baker ble etterfølgeren.
