Geography Research Task/Extended Essay Zac Smits Singapore is located in the Southern-most extremity of the Malay Peninsula (approximately 124km north of the equator). It comprises of one main island and 57 smaller islands covering a total of 620km2. Singapore has high temperatures, humidity and rainfall all year round and is described as tropical. It has an open economy with strong manufacturing sectors and excellent international trading. Here is. Their infant mortality rate of 2.5 per 1,000 live births in 2000 was the lowest ever recorded in Singapore. In 1990, the rate was 6.6 per 1,000 live births.Infant Mortality Rate, 2000 One area of concern is the fertility rate. Fertility remained below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman throughout the 1990s. The total fertility rate fell steadily from 1.8 children per woman in 1990 to 1.5 in 1999, before rising slightly to 1.6 in 2000. This may be because there are fewer males to females in the population. (998 males -> 1000 females) Total Fertility Rate Here is a table of world life expectancies. As you can see, Singapore is one of the highest in the world.
