Smartphones Are Affecting Youth’s Social Relationship

Smartphones have become a problem in today’s generation especially for adolescences that has shown a decline in focus and intellect in the past few years. Although smartphones are created to help make communication easier, they also affect youth’s performance and productivity in school, in their workplace, home, and their communication with adults. Other teenagers use social media to express their feelings online and to release their anger and stress. Most of the time, when teenagers reveal too much on the internet, violence and rumours can take place afterwards, which results in arguments and misunderstandings. The youth today feel as if they cannot live without their smartphones and without access to the internet. They have become highly dependent on their smartphones and this has changed the way youth interact with adults. The advancement of smartphones has negatively impacted youth’s social relationship with their teachers, employers and their parents.
The use of smartphones in class affects students’ focus and academic performance in school and their relationship with their teachers. “Staying up all hours to play online games, letting homework slide and avoiding friendships in the real world are some symptoms to watch for in intense gamers” (Tamsyn). This shows that students who are obsessed with playing games on their smartphones (and other technologies) can be easily distracted from doing their homework and finishing their projects. When students also play too many video games, it can result to a lack of sleep which makes them come to school late and get moody. Teachers notice that some of their students’ marks are dropping due to students not handing in their assignments on time and not paying attention during classes. In addition, due to students who use their smartphones to text during class time cause the interruption of the entire class, as teachers have to stop teaching in order to reprimand them. Other students have become frivolous on their studies because all they do is tweet, text, post and comment their thoughts on social networking sites and occupy themselves with their video games. Students have also created a negative relationship with their teachers by using social media on their smartphones to talk about their teachers. According to Sheila Allison, “in the case of social media, the medium – a small, affordable device that one has personal control of – can be a very powerful thing” (Allison). Students are using their devices to slander their teachers while not knowing the consequences of their actions. According to Tamsyn Burgmann, “many school boards ban cellphone use and block students from accessing social networking sites in particular Facebook and other websites deemed inappropriate for the classroom” (Burgmann). This is valid because on social networking sites, it is easy and fast to spread out news and/or rumors to others. A school can suspend a student for this behavior.
