The amount of American smokers is at an alarmingly high rate. Each time a smoker has a cigarette their life expectancy lowers. There are many different ways to quit smoking, but many of these methods are difficult to continue doing or are more expensive then continuing to smoke. This needs to change if the nation is going to see a time where less smokers are around. Smoking effects more than the smokers themselves, so to increase the health of the entire nation smoking must be stopped.

Often, smoking is replaced by eating snacks, biting fingernails, or even chewing on anything that can be fit into the mouth easily. This is because a smoker is used to having their mouth busy, so the adjustment makes them feel like they need something to replace it.
Nicotine withdrawal symptoms can also be a big reason why smoking can be hard to quit. A symptom of nicotine withdrawal can be irritability or impatience. It often lasts two to four weeks. To counteract these problems, exercise and/or take hot baths. Make sure to stay relaxed and to avoid caffeine intake. Another big symptom that is likely to occur is insomnia. This can also last two to four weeks. To help fight the insomnia, avoidance caffeine after 6 P.M. and staying relaxed by doing activities such as reading when you have troubles with sleeping can be large helps. A person may also experience fatigue and lack of concentration for a few weeks. Avoid this symptom by reducing the amount of work and keeping away from stress. Another symptom a person may encounter is hunger that can last several weeks or longer. To prevent this, eat low-calorie snacks and drink low-calorie drinks or water. There is also possibility of having cold symptoms such as coughing, dry throat, and nasal drip for several weeks. This can be treated with drinking fluids and using cough drops like a normal cold. Constipation and gas are symptoms as well. These may only last one or two weeks, but can be fought by drinking plenty of fluids, eating high fiber foods, and getting fair amounts of exercise. Finally, another common symptom is the craving to have a cigarette. Sometimes, this can last days, weeks, or even months. This can be the hardest craving to fight, but waiting for it to go away is a great way to fight these urges. There are many different symptoms that can pull a person back into smoking, but fighting these urges have benefits that hugely outweigh continuing to smoke.
Smoking does not just effect the person who is smoking the cigarette, it effects everyone around them. When a person smokes a cigarette, a lot of the smoke is released into the air causing nearby people to breathe it in. This smoke is called secondhand smoke. It contains more than 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds of these chemicals are toxic, and about 70 of them cause cancer (cdc.gov). Infants and children are especially susceptible to diseases caused by secondhand smoke. Some effects that it can cause are: frequent and severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) (cdc.gov). A child who is around and breaths in secondhand smoke is more likely to get sick. Wheezing and coughing also become more likely for these children. Before a child is even born, smoke can effect it in major ways. It can cause many different birth defects and even lead to death before birth.
