Over several years thousands of species have become extinct. The snow leopard rooms the mountains of central Asia with the everyday threat of extinction.
The snow leopard ways between 77 to 121 pounds and is about 24 inches tall at the shoulder. Their thick gray and black fur keeps the leopard warm in the cold mountain climate and helps them blend in with their surroundings. The thickness of their fur changes depending on the season. During the winter and fall of their fur is thick growing up to at least 5 inches. During the spring and summer their fur is thin. The Snow Leopards long thick tail helps them keep their balance. In order to communicate across long distances, Snow Leopards leave markings on the landscape that other Snow Leopard can find. These markings include scratching the ground with their hind legs and spraying rocks with urine. Snow Leopards cannot roar instead they make more of a hissing or meow sound. They quietly stalk their prey and when they're ready they spring on it, leaping up to fifty feet. These beautiful cats have litters of 1 to 3 cubs and the cubs remain with their mothers for 20 months.
The Snow Leopard is the top predator in the mountain ecosystem therefore, their only predators are humans. Humans mainly hunt the Snow Leopard for their beautiful fur coat but there are other problems of the Snow Leopard faces.
Although there are many reasons as to why the Snow Leopard is going extinct, the main reason is poaching. Poachers capture and kill snow leopards for their fur coat which is valued in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and Russia for garment making.
