Snowboarding is a form of exercise like many other sports and activities, but is seen by some as just a hobby and past time. To others, it is a way of life. Great praise should be given to the “art” of shredding the powder; it is not only fun but extremely healthy and supports an active life style. Like exercising and many other sports the main purpose of snowboarding is to feel good, have fun, and get a work out all at the same time!
The meaning of exercise is an activity that requires physical or mental exertion, especially when performed to develop or maintain fitness. Snowboarding should be interpreted as an extreme or legitimate form of exercise like biking, Pilates/yoga, and weight training due to its large requirement of both physical and mental exertion that helps improve cardio vascular health, flexibility, muscle tone/definition and endurance. Not only does it aid in the physical attributes of health, it also releases endorphins which causes stress relief, “Snowboarding, like any form of exercise, releases endorphins, the neurochemicals responsible for feelings of happiness and well-being. Snowboarding can regularly lead to consistently high endorphin levels. Exercising outdoors also helps to elevate mood and reduce anxiety, so snowboarding can lower stress levels and support mental health.” (Leitch).
The exasperating input of leg work in snowboarding pays off with extreme endurance and cardio-vascular training, “Snowboarding is an aerobic exercise that offers an intense cardio workout and helps burn calories. The average person burns up to 450 calories per hour, so it's a great way to lose weight and increases your endurance.”(Fast). The aerobic activity snowboarding offers is just another reason why it should be considered a legitimate exercise just like biking. The constant and consistent use of energy while snowboarding gives a very cross country type of feel to the extreme sport. Due to the unique movements required while boarding, muscles which people never think they had are sore the next morning displaying yet again why snowboarding should be interpreted and defined as an extreme exercise.
The mental and physical input required to snowboard correctly and efficiently is highly demanding. This is why most people who have experienced an exhausting mountainside adventure with friends or even by themselves consider it to be an extreme source of physical exercise.
