Retailers have created their own Facebook book pages and Twitter accounts to market themselves. Now, they are selling direct to consumers (e-commerce stores) via the social networking sites of Facebook and MySpace.
What kind of product categories would be most appropriate for selling via Social Media? Why?
I found the following Product Categories by Type advertised on Social Networking Sites:
Bars and Clubs
Celebrities / Public Figures
Affiliate marketers take advantage of social networking sites to reach a target audience without investing a great deal of money. Social media is used to have products noticed and to promote the brand were consumers spend most of their time.
Products that sell best on the internet through social media are products consumers are fairly familiar with or products that do not carry an element surprise upon receiving them. People tend to buy products online that they don’t need to touch smell or examine. The consumer has a pretty good idea what they are getting. I think the most appropriate product categories are books, movies, music, travel, electronics, flowers, cards and clothing.
Amazon.com does well because there is no mystery to buying a book as reviews are written on line and you are able to determine rather easily if this book you prefer and shipping is generally easy and fast. Social Media sites also help in promoting a book as people post reviews of what they read which could encourage a purchase of a book.
Movies and music sell well also through the internet and social media as music can be listened to, movie clips can be watched making the choice of a purchase easier, as well as comment from friends recommending the music or movie.
Travel sells well as this is easier than taking a trip the travel agent, through the internet you can compare prices, review ratings and have more control over airlines, hotels and other options for your trip, again a friend may have traveled were you are going providing tips and cites such as Travelocity to use for the trip.
Electronics are hot categories for consumers however they do not do as well as consumers like to feel the product, turn it on for clarity, and test the features. Even though friends in a social network may give advice for a purchase, consumers still have the need to see and test the electronic item.
