The growth of social media has had a tremendous change in our society; some changes are negative while the others are positive. Social networking has become so popular; it has increased extremely in the last decade. Social media has a positive effect on teenager and student, while other say it has had a negative effect due to cyber bullying and reduced learning and not paying attention in class.
Many social network sites are allowing people to share their information, pictures and video along with their friends, families and people they meet online. Students who are involved in social media sites usually results in their grades becoming lower and lower, as they begin to lose interest in their schoolwork, it becomes difficult for them to concentrate in order to student well. Social medias’ are available to anyone at any time of day, that’s why it’s hard for students to stay away from them. While they are in class, students are consistently paying attention to their phones to continuously check their newsfeeds’ or even update their status. They are spending muost of their time checking their page and not listening to their teachers’ lecture. This is why grades are getting lower, and it’s getting hard for teachers to grade students, they are not turning in any of their work. (Graham, 2011)
Social networks can have a positive effect for students, it gives them the opportunity to express one and feel better when others are judging them. Many sites help build self-esteem especially Youtube and Tumblr. Youtube allows you to listen to music, upload videos and create a playlist. Music can be used for many things: it helps people with health issues and those with educational difficulties, as helps them improved their physical, psychological, intellectual or social functioning. Music gives people the opportunity to feel better about them and to have self-value, there are tons of songs with the lyrics that we relate to. Music also allows children to improve self-esteem, attention, concentration, learning and social skills with others and in school. (Brown, 2013) According to socialnetworking.procon.org social networking sites help students do better at school: 59% of students who access to the internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss education topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments. After George Middle School in Portland, OR introduced a social media program to engage students, grades went up by 50% chronic absenteeism went down by 33%, and 20% of students school-wide voluntarily completed extra credit assignments.
Social networking and their negative effects have caused some king of potential harm to our society. Students are usually the first ones that become victims of social networks because they begin studying and search for their material online. Students often get fascinated to most of the social network sites because they want to kill their boredom and get away from their study time.
