Social Media is a form of electronic communication, through which users create online communities and groups to share information, ideas, and personal messages. Such forms include: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; these sites are open to everyone age thirteen and older. Facebook launched in 2004, and to date has 1.28 billion active users per month (newsroom).Twitter introduced the concept of “microblogging” to the world in 2006, and today has 255 million active users(Craig Smith). Instagram, the favorite social media site for picture sharing, is right behind Twitter, with 200 million active users, which launched in 2010 (Instagram).

Twenty- nine percent of teens say social media makes then less shy, and fifteen percent say social media improves the way they feel amount themselves(commonsensemedia). Social media is not always used for keeping up with friends, drama starts easily, which leads to cyberbullying, the posting of damaging or cruel text or images using the internet or other digital communication. A single post is all it takes to hurt another, with social media bullies have an easier time picking on their weaker peers. Cyberbullying can lead to suicide, depression, and a new phenomenon called “Facebook depression”, which is defined as “depression that develops when preteens and teens spend a great deal of time on social media sites, such as Facebook, and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression”(Gwenn O’Keeffe, Kathleen Pearson).Anyone can anonymously post hurtful messages or pictures. For instance, Billy Wolfe, a sophomore (2008) in Fayetteville, Arkansas was a victim of cyber bullying, which went on for years. The bullying became so bad, he was afraid to go to school, for fear of getting beat up. In one particular instance, Billy was punched in the head and this was recorded, shared, and spread throughout the school. Students from Billy's school also created a webpage titled, "Everyone That Hates Billy Wolfe" (Weebly).
In Billy’s case he sued the Fayetteville School District alleging he was beaten and sexually harassed by classmates because he did not meet their stereotypical expectations of male masculinity. The suit sought $2.5 million in damages, but the jurors found the case in favor of the defendant the Fayetteville School District. The jury rejected Wolfe’s claims the district violated Title IX, a federal law that bans sex discrimination in schools in both academics and athletics (Ron Wood).
In other cases some teens do not only have hatful lies spread, but also comprising photographs, known as sexting, which is defined as “sending, receiving, or forwarding sexually explicit messages, photographs, or images via cell phone, computer, or other digital device” (O’Keeffe, Pearson).Such as a case in Rowan County, North Carolina, where a seventeen year old male was charged with cyberbullying after posting a nude photo of a 15-year-old girl to an Instagram site. The girl in had sent the photo to her boyfriend, who in turn sent it to a friend, from there it ended up on Instagram. After being charged for cyberbullying the boy who posted the picture was suspended from school (kdvr).
Only twenty states include cyberbullying alongside bullying in laws. Arkansas is among the twenty who include cyberbullying, electronic harassment, and off campus behaviors (cyberbullyingus). Cyberbullying has more than just an effect on the victim; it also has an effect on the antagonist. Sending out compromising pictures of another, and if the person in the pictures is under age eighteen, the one who sets up the picture may be tried and convicted as a sex offender. Other...
