Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs are the newly developed advancements of science, and specifically, of the Biotechnology. The word GMO represents a special class of organisms, which have some genetic elements from other species (West 49). All the organisms on this planet have Nucleic acid material (DNA/RNA) for their proper functioning and for inheriting their traits to the next generations. Biotechnology has enabled the human kind to know and understand the specific sequences of DNA and RNA, which are associated with specific characteristics. And by knowing this information, scientists can manipulate the sequences, which mean that they can acquire alternated characteristics (West 13). ...view middle of the document...

Sometimes the gatherings on local restaurants talk about the issue persuasively, but what is overall point of this debate? People show concern about the advancements in the science and the ethical perspective of this issue. How these concerns originate at first place? In 1958 Watson and Crick discovered the model of Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA, and after that a row of achievements got started (21). In 1970s, the enzymes, which can cut this DNA sequence have been discovered and then the enzymes, which can stick the two pieces of DNA together. The terms used for them were molecular scissors and glues respectively. After that the first manipulation of genetic material got performed in early 1980s. The basic organisms of the experiment were microorganisms like bacteria and viruses. Advancements further got their way toward the reality and in 1982 multi-cellular organism got cloned with desired characteristics. This was a small genetically modified tobacco plant. This was the time, when the concerns about the ethical perspective of this technology originated (West 15).
Genetically modified crops have been introduced to the world with greater benefits. Herbicide-immune soybeans, Bt-cotton, and golden rice with additional vitamins are some of the wide terms of this marvelous, but controversial, technology. In 2004, it has been recorded that almost 8.25 million farmers grows genetically modified plants in the 17 great countries of the world (West 49). These are the crops, which have shown some obvious benefits to the farmers and also to the people for their acceptance. Many of the vegetables and fruits have been genetically modified, but have never been passed the standards of FDA or USDA (Baker and Burnham 387). The main reason of this rejection has been confined to societal perspective of the problem. People do not buy genetically modified food. There are campaigns and protestations about the development and marketing of GMFs. The basic problem has always been associated with the ethical and societal values of the consumers, without knowing the actual scientific side effects.
There are two types of reasons, which can provoke the users to either use the GMFs or protest against it. One most obvious reason is Biological or scientific. This is the reason which has its basis in the actual problem. Almost 20% of genetic foods have been cancelled due to the biological side effects of the problem (see table 1). Potential of antibiotic resistance capability of infectious microorganisms, additional chemicals like aminoglycoside 3'-phosphotransferase II, and the loss of biodiversity are some of the authentic concerns for the applications of GMFs in the real world.
