A conventional symbol is a setting, character, object or event in a story that carries more than the literal meaning and therefore represents something significant to understanding the meaning of a work of literature. A Literary symbol is usually an object that represents an idea that is significantly deeper although it is sometimes a word, event or deed. An example of a literary symbol is a bundle of flowers, usually given out of an act of love, passion or grief. In the story "The story Of an Hour" Ms. Millard was preparing to die of her heart attack during the season of spring. Spring can be seen as a rebirth after a long winter of death and no life, The fact that Mrs. Millard was preparing to die spring may seem ironic at first but when thinking of what else spring represents it does not. As Mrs. Millard was preparing to die during a harmonies' time of life and rebirth I believe that she found peace before her death during such a beautiful season. An example of a literary symbol obtained from the readings was in the story " Battle Royal" when the young African Amrican boy was asked to read his motivational speech that he previously read at his graduation. This speech is a Literary symbol because it has much deeper meaning than just being used as plain old speech for the African American ironically the Battle Royal was a way to disrespect and mock the young black youth.
