Solar Energy Essay

1023 words - 5 pages

The traditional, non renewable form energy is created by fossil fuels, such as coal, gas, and oil. The process begins at a power plant (primary energy source) where, heat exerted from burnin, are transformed into electrical energy. This creates high-pressured steam to form a turbine, which allows a rotor to power the generator. There an electrical current is created through the process of induction, by spinning an electrical current and conductor around each other. There the electrical energy or voltage is sent through a series of transformers, where various circuits until it reaches a building.
Another non-renewable form of energy is nuclear power. It operates the same as a traditional ...view middle of the document...

Thus an electrical field, then the electrons flow as a current to produce energy. This explains the process of an active solar system, because a chemical or electrical device is used to convert sunlight/heat into energy. A passive solar system uses a building to collect, store, then distribute heat. Thus both systems are energy efficient.Buildings that have multiple windows that are closely arranged collect and store the sun’s heat in floors and walls. At night the heat is released.
Since solar panels have positive aspects to them, there are negative ones too. Using solar panels is safer and more environmentally friendly compared to non-renewable sources. Such as their expensive price. The cost of solar panels depends on the location of panels, size of building, and partial or full installation. The initial price can vary from about $50,000 to $100,00, depending on those variables. Although, after about twenty-five years or more of usage, the panels should virtually pay for itself by lowering the electric bill. It is predicted that by 2025, the overall cost of solar panels will dramatically decrease, thus making it more affordable to the general public. If the panels are damaged or improperly disposed of it can release hazardous substances, such as silicon tetrachloride. The waste product is produced from the silicon in the panels, its harmful effect to the environment can cause plants to die and soil to be infertile.
Solar panels reach their full potential when its sunny outside. On cloudy days, and typical
nights, solar panels are unable to operate 24/7. The only solution is to store the energy collected. There various complications with this, because it was impractical to store large-scale systems with batteries. Also, energy can be stored in water by using the energy to move uphill, the release energy when flows downhill, and the same concept with compressing air. This was an issue, because only approximately eight percent of the energy was recovered. Although, solar-thermal power plants can easily store its energy in heat by, keeping its temperatures high with specially formulated salts (combination of potassium...

In what could become the largest solar power project of its kind in the nation, “the Department of Education is proposing to install photovoltaic panels on every public school in Hawaii over the next five years in a bid to cut electricity costs and move the state closer to its renewable energy goals” (Vorsino). Officials also believe the proposed system

Solar Energy

1511 words - 6 pages Solar energy can be used in different ways during the construction of houses in order to conserve energy. Solar energy comes as a gift of nature and this makes it even more economical to use in our buildings. It is not only free but unlike other sources of energy; it also limits the amount of pollution caused to the environment. When building our houses the goal according to David Johnston and Scott Gibson is to create a house that consumes at

Solar Energy

1517 words - 6 pages Tran 1 Solar Energy About 47 percent of the energy that the sun releases to the earth actually reaches the ground. About a third is reflected directly back into space by the atmosphere. The time in which solar energy is available, is also the time we least need it least - daytime. Because the sun's energy cannot be stored for use another time, we need to convert the suns energy into an energy that can be stored. One possible method of storing
