In the novel, Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. The central theme of the novel is love. One character from the novel who explores her love is, Hagar’s love for Milkman. Hagar’s love for Milkman is an example of unhealthy love because, of her craziness, overpowering love, and being alone. In the next three paragraphs, the three reasons will be explained why Hagar’s love for Milkman is an unhealthy love.
The first reason why Hagar’s love for Milkman is consider as unhealthy love, because of her craziness that she has for Milkman. Hagar has been trying to kill Milkman, since Milkman broke up with her and thought about her not as a girlfriend/ wife anymore. He has moved on but as for Hagar, she had gone all crazy searching for Milkman all round town and following him around. While in the meantime, looking for the right weapon, “to murder her true love” Morrison P.g 126. Another craziness of ...view middle of the document...
Hagar has not come to think for herself and asked Milkman if he, himself has the same feelings as her. This is why it is an unhealthy love because the two, Milkman and Hagar when they were together didn’t really connect as much. Nor see each other a lot, compared to what a real relationship is based on.
The third reason for being an unhealthy love between Hagar and Milkman is Hagar being alone. What this is meant by is Hagar can’t be left alone because in the text she said “There would be months when Hagar would not see him, and then he’d appear one day and she was all smiles and welcome.”Morrison P.g 98. What this is referring to as that Hagar misses Milkman for not seeing him for such a long time but then while the whole time she is left alone. It seems like she is a different person because then is says that right when he (Milkman) would appear one day and she was all smiles and welcome. This is stating that while Milkman is gone Hagar is sad, depressed ,and a little out of life. Until Milkman comes back and she is all back to normal as full of joy.
In conclusion to Hagar’s love for Milkman, and reasons being of her craziness, overpowering love, and being alone are examples of why it is an unhealthy love between Hagar and Milkman. That is why this novel is written this way, for two family members known as cousin to have one fall in love for another is odd. This is interesting to continue reading because of wanting to know what will happened next. But in this case, Hagar and Milkman relationship comes to an end and leads to Hagar changing into a killer but just mainly wanting to kill Milkman for ending it. Although Hagar did have the chance to kill Milkman at some point in the novel. For some odd reason Hagar didn’t continue with it because Hagar couldn't go through with killing of her “true love” since that was that Hagar called Milkman because of the overpowering love and some other reason that wasn’t told in the story but will be soon. But in the end of it all Hagar does seem to fit the position as for having an unhealthy love because of the reasons that were given.
