Special Collections Division Of Joyner Library

For sixty years Joyner Library has been welcoming students, staff, and others into its realm of information. This library is more than a place that houses books; it provides students with an environment that guides them to success in their academics, especially their writing. In 1963 the History Department of East Carolina University added on to the stack of books here at Joyner Library by creating the Special Collections Division. Although Joyner Library’s Special Collection is shared between the History and English departments now, it still contains a source of pride to all of Pirate Nation. After surveying students around campus, I was informed that very few, if any, students have used the Special Collections in the Library. Over fifty percent of the students I questioned were unaware of the Special Collections room let alone that Joyner Library even had a fourth floor. Through my observations I realized that not many undergraduate students take advantage of the resources that the Special Collections division has to offer because they are unaware of the resources or they don’t understand the advantages of having the Special Collections Division. While interviewing the receptionist in the Special Collections room, he informed me that most students use the resources when they have a project or an assignment that forces them to explore into the information available. He stated, “the people who visit the special collection rooms vary from time to time but are usually History or English graduate students.” He explained that the students come to get information from the primary resources that we have in their archives. Although the Special Collections division is located on ECU’s campus it is not limited to students’ access; people who are unrelated to the university, such as genealogists, have come to the Special Collections room to request information on their family’s heritage and roots. The receptionist felt that the resources and information that the Special Collections room can offer students, staff, and others is hard to come by. He said that the information and the opportunity to expand your research is worth every minute in the Special Collections Division (Receptionist of Special Collections).
Likewise, the environment in the Special Collections room is one that reminds me of a “real Library.” The dark stained wood paneling that covers the perimeter of the room is stunning and can only add to the character of the room. The skylight that is the focal point of the room lets writers indulge in their research and engage in their creativity. The feeling of comfort and peacefulness gives writers a useful space to be engrossed in learning. Even though some may say the quietness and professionalism in the room intimidates them, I could not imagine a better place to explore my imagination through artifacts...
