On April 15th, almost 300 girls were kidnapped from their school in Nigeria. Less than two weeks later, a young women was stabbed in the face, throat and stomach by her classmate in a Connecticut high school And a month later, Elliot Rodger went on a killing rampage in California. All three of these tragedies, all in the span of a month, occurred because women didn’t do what men wanted them to do and they refused to accept women as equals. The kidnapped Nigerian girls were to be sold and traded, the girl was stabbed because she declined his invitation to the junior prom, and Elliot Rodger went on a killing rampage because girls wouldn’t have sex with him. For example, when a man wears a sleeveless top, he is showing off his muscles and is viewed by society as being “confident”, whereas when a girl is wearing a tank top, she is being too revealing and is viewed by society as being “slutty”. Not to mention the fact that men’s’ swim trunks and bikinis cover the same amount of skin, but everyone seems to think that only bikinis are revealing. Men are also thought of as being attractive based on their looks or muscles, but women are labeled by the largeness of their breasts and bottoms. Also, in reality TV shows that require trickery and broken alliances and promises, men usually win. This is the case in Big Brother, where no women has ever beat a man in the final, because while trickery by men is a game well played, if a girl does that, she is rude and unlikable. These are all ways that women are viewed differently than men even though the situations were similar.
Lastly, women and men are not treated as equals in the workplace. Even though many people think that it is not concern in our society, but in fact, recent studies show that 15% of workers today have been affected by sexual discrimination. Though the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states that every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit without discrimination based on sex, women generally earn 25% less than men, even though they may work harder and for longer hours than their male counterparts. It’s illegal to pay people differently depending on their gender, but businesses get around that rule by giving bonuses, or giving different titles, so that the pay can be different. Also, according to the Canadian labour relations, women are not given equal opportunities of promotions, or equal respect, even if they are deserving, because men think that women are too attached to their families to be fully committed to their work, and that they are too emotional and softhearted to fire people and to make difficult decisions. Society believes that women cannot handle tough situations or hard laboring jobs. For example, women are rarely found at construction sites and body checking is illegal in women’s hockey, whereas it is a common practice in men’s hockey.
