In recent years, ethical issues in sports have been a major topic for discussion and media coverage. One major sport ethics controversy that occurred in recent years was the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State University. Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant coach under head coach Joe Paterno, had been accused of child molestation in 2009 and ultimately convicted in 2012. The scandal was quite controversial, as a large number of Penn State officials knew what Sandusky was doing, but covered it up nonetheless.
Jerry Sandusky’s coaching career with Penn State lasted from 1966 to 1999. Sandusky started out as a graduate coaching assistant at Penn State during the 1966 season. After having taken 2 other coaching positions in 1967 and 1968, Sandusky returned to Penn State in 1969 as an assistant coach, where he remained until his retirement in 1999. Sandusky spent his entire Penn State career under head coach Joe Paterno ("biography.com").
Alongside his football career, in 1977, Sandusky founded a nonprofit charity organization called The Second Mile. The mission of the organization was to provide support for underprivileged children and their families, and to enrich their lives (Lentz). However, during the time that Sandusky was being investigated, it was discovered that Sandusky himself had been inappropriately touching children who were clients of The Second Mile (Viera, Becker).
When the trial began on June 11th, 2012, Sandusky was initially accused of a total of 52 counts of sexual abuse of 10 different children, all of whom he met through The Second Mile. 4 of the charges were immediately dropped, and Sandusky was eventually found guilty of 45 of the 48 remaining charges (Baker). It was discovered that Sandusky had been molesting children since at least 1994, up until the year 2009 (Ganim). On October 9th, 2012, Sandusky was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison, and a maximum of 60 years (Hermitt).
Sandusky was not the only one under fire during the scandal; several Penn State administrators were accused of covering up for Sandusky’s misdeeds....
