Playing a sport is an extremely important part of today’s world, especially where kids are concerned. It might be a team sport, or an individual one, but almost every teenager is involved in some type of competition. Young athletes play their hardest, and try their hardest to be the best that they can be. As a society, our attention tends to be on the game; who scores or who wins, who makes the play, and who comes out on top. Unfortunately, however, while these are all important life lessons that need to be taught and learned, attention to the consequences of what competition can bring is often overlooked. Competition and physical activity can bring out the best in all of us… but it can also bring out the worst. Along those lines, involvement in a competitive sport can be the source of injury, which can have life-altering effects. While there are many injuries that can result from physical activity, an injury in today’s world that is increasingly being brought to our attention involves the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in young female athletes. This substantial problem has become a source of concern for female athletes, and it will continue to do so if we don’t take action to make a difference. It is important to realize that there are many reasons for this unique injury to occur, and there are many sports in which it does occur. To be blunt, we need to focus on and put more time into paying attention to the proper warm-up and cool-down exercise patterns that female athletes observe and/or practice. Coaches and athletes need to have a better understanding and knowledge of preventing ACL injuries by using good techniques. More specifically, female athletes in Greenwich, Connecticut, need to improve their health, especially with regards to ACL injuries, by exercising, practicing, and preparing, for their competitions in the proper way.
First of all, in order to understand what the ACL is and why it is important, we need to know the anatomy of the knee. The knee joint is the largest and most complex joint in the body. This is because it actually consists of three separate joints grouped into one. The three parts are: the two condylar joints between the medial and lateral condyles of the femur (thigh bone) and corresponding condyles of the tibia (shin bone), and also the gliding joint between the patella (kneecap) and patellar surface of the femur. A condyle is the rounded surface at the end of a bone; medial means the “middle side” of the joint, lateral refers to the “outer side” of the joint. Now, inside of these three joints (in other words, inside the knee joint, itself), there are two main ligaments that connect the femur to the tibia. They are the anterior (front) and posterior (back) cruciate ligaments. As you can guess, a ligament is a supporting structure that connects two bones together like a string.
