Stages Of Child Behavior Essay

According to Erik Erikson he believed that personality developed in variety of stages. The theory describes that challenges the person goes through of social experience, it addresses both stability and personality change. Erik also believed that a sense of competence motivates behaviors and actions. Each stage is concerning to become more skilled in a certain area of life starting from childhood and becoming important during adolescence. In each stage it describes a conflict that the person must now how to handle if it will fail or be able to develop that quality.
Erik Erikson was born June15, 1902 in Frankfurt. Germany. His parents were divorced before his birth but later his mother married a physician Dr. Theodor Homberger but the bad part was that his mother never told him that Homberger was his biological dad so it made confusion on his life which was the key for him to have an interest in the formation of identity. The interest in identity developed based upon his experience in school. Later on got a certificate from Vienna Psychoanalytic Society where he studied psychoanalysis. He started working at as school that was created by Dorothy Burlingham where he met Joan Serson and later on got married with and went on to have 3 children. In 1933 Erik moved to Boston, Massachusetts and they offered him a job at Harvard Medical School as the first child analyst. He also held positions at many institutions like Yale, Berkley, and the Menninger Foundation. He changed his name to Erik H. Erikson and published number of books about his theories and research and won a Pulitzer Prize and a U.S. National Book Award.
The stages of psychosocial development were described were from the perspective of Erik that the stages are related to age and that people will pass this stages in a specific order making each stage building on capacities developed in the previous stage and hoping the person will confront and master the new challenges. Erik developed his theory in the 1950s introducing the 8 stages from birth to death. The first stage of Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development occurs from birth through 18 months. Since the infant is utterly dependent, the development of trust is based on the quality of the child’s caregivers. The caregiver must give the child a successfully trust of being safe and secure in the world that nothing will hurt them because they will always be there for them.
