While I was searching for a captivating career for life during my BDS, something that would grip my mind and keep me thirsting for more, I was captivated by the sphere of public health and similar issues which were not localized to any one nation but had global ramifications if not arrested on time. My search ended for I had found my calling. Today a desire to be a part of the leading force of public health professionals brings me to the Masters Degree course in Public Health at your University.
An ambitious, energetic and dedicated student I have been diligent about my goals, education as well as the co-curricular arena. At the Holy Family High School I learnt that morals and success go hand in hand. Desirous of becoming a dentist I gave my all to the course which took me closer to my goal with the dawn of each day. However in my third year I was introduced to Public Health and Community Dentistry. At the various camps which I attended I learned about simple yet inexpensive and effective methods of treatment. Believing that doing is the best way of learning I actively participated in developing projects. A model project on ‘Various Types of Teeth Stains’ broadened my perspective on the subject. The opportunity to conduct a free dental health check up for incarcerated individuals was unrivalled. This was followed by general awareness about oral hygiene. Through these interactions I noticed my communication skills and understood that I have the ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
As a Public Relation member of the “Rotaract Committee” I engaged in several health schemes, Hepatitis B vaccination drives etc. for the students of Government Dental College – Mumbai apart from working for the underprivileged under a novel project scheme. Additionally, I also participated in an Anti-Tobacco Campaign held by an NGO. These projects gave me lot of inspiration and desire to understand the management skills required in conducting public health activities. In an attempt to gain more clinical exposure, during my internship I spent extra hours at the orthodontist’s clinic where I trained for six months. Further attending workshop on Forensic Odontology conducted by Indo Pacific Academy of Forensic Odontology held at Government Dental College, in Mumbai were further enlightening. My continued learning about public health both through course work and fieldwork made me realize that field experience is one of the most valuable learning tools and hence I practiced a lot of...
