That was probably the first time I had my own set of building blocks. My parents observed me having fun playing with it and decided to give me more such sets. That was how my arsenal of building blocks expanded and so did my interest in this field.
Academically, I have always been consistent. I passed my undergraduate degree course, B. E. in civil engineering from Assam Engineering College with 78.52% with honours. Before that, I had cleared my Class 12th Grade, AISSCE (All India Senior School Certificate Examination), with 86.6% and my 10th Grade exam, AISSE (All India Secondary School Examination), with 82.8%!
It was during my undergraduate study that I was introduced to the various fields of civil engineering. I especially found ‘Theory of Structures’ and ‘Design of Structures’ classes to be very interesting whereupon I built strong foundations. I even opted for Earthquake engineering as one of the elective subjects in the final year. But clearly, an undergraduate course cannot provide in-depth knowledge; whatever I have covered in these subjects form only a small fraction of the vast areas and opportunities of structural engineering. Since I believe that my future lies in the field of structural engineering, I need to increase my knowledge and practical skills so that I can make my career in the field of research. Such a course of action also entails working on a thesis under expert guidance which will further my experience in research.
Though my experience has not been extensive, I have learned whatever I could in the limited opportunities I have had so far. For instance, I have undergone a month long internship in Larsen & Toubro Valdel Ltd, Bangalore, in the structural department. During this internship, I designed a steel bridge spanning 74 meters and consisting of only tubular sections to connect two offshore process platforms. Beginning with preliminary hand calculations, I designed the member sections and performed Lift analysis and In-place analysis using SACS Release 5.3 SP2.
I also underwent a fortnight long internship in Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Bongaigaon Refinery, in the Engineering Service Department. During this internship, I studied the planning and construction of an industrial steel structure which gave me exposure to its practical aspects.
Apart from internships, I completed my 8th semester project titled ‘Design of a Five-storeyed R.C.C. Residential building considering the requirements of the intended purpose. The final output is in the form of reinforcement detailing of the various constituent parts essential for the execution of construction work.
I have also presented papers like “Goodness of fit test for few probability distribution functions with reference to River Pagladia, Assam” in the National...
