Could you imagine being limited by something that has nothing to do with your skills or ability? If you look at the leadership positions of many of the world’s top companies, you will find that few women occupy those positions. This observation can also be related to the number of Hispanic people who occupy high positions in those top companies. This is very obvious when one compares the number of Hispanic leaders versus White leaders. Although many people believe that interracial conflicts are mostly a thing of the past, this is still projecting as an invisible barrier in one of the most prominent areas of life: the work place. In the work place, many people face different issues and conflicts, and there are many aspects behind the fact that Hispanics seem to not be able to become successful in the top companies. There are some major and different problems that many Hispanic individuals face in today’s society. The biggest conflicts seen today are interracial conflicts among their employees and supervisors. Some of this could be caused by stereotyping, prejudice, and interpersonal relations.
In the business world of today, there are many employers that claim to be "Equal Opportunity Employers". This means that the company pledges to its applicants that their employees are treated without regard to race, religion, sex, color, and age, and national origin, physical or mental disability (Equal Opportunity is The Law, 2009). This pledge includes employment, promotions, transfers, recruitment, compensation, and ensuring a work environment that is harassment free. Take this small scenario as an example of how companies tend to treat people of other races. A company is in search of hiring a new manager and one of the current managers has interviewed a possible candidate whom has all the necessary skills and background for the position. She is a middle aged, Hispanic female, with perfect qualifications but, nonetheless, for an undeclared reason, this manager feels that she will not be a good fit for the position. Being that the candidate has the necessary experience and education for the position, it could be a possibility that the manager’s decision stems from a social bias or stereotype, just because she was Hispanic.
A stereotype is defined as an "oversimplified, usually disapproving, attitude people hold toward those outside one's own experience who are different” (WHAT IS STEREOTYPING2013). Stereotypes are forms of the availability heuristic, which is when a person jumps to conclusions about a certain person of a different race before even getting to know that person. The manager's presumed stereotype of Hispanic Females has led him to believe that the candidate would not be suitable, without even considering her qualifications or getting to know her. The stereotype could be racial, sexist and/or discriminatory in nature, which are leading him to these biases.
