In recent times bullying has become a national issue, notwithstanding the fact that it has been in existence for many years. Traditionally, bullying has been seen as horseplay, but with the increase of harassment in schools and suicides; parents and schools are now forced to take action to prevent bullying in schools. Bullying is an unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance which has the potential to be repeated over time. Strategies to prevent bullying in schools are grouped into identifying the causes of bullying, creating policies and rules, building a safe environment and educating students and staff.
A category of strategies to prevent bullying in schools is identifying the causes of bullying. One factor that may cause bullying is the students’s family life. The lack of love or approval and involvement from the parents or overly permissive parenting where there is a lack of supervision or no rules may initiate bullying as the child may feel insecure. Another factor that may cause bullying is peer pressure. Friends who are aggressive and have a high social status in the school may cause the child to use bullying as a way of enhancing their social power with their peers. This may be so as picking on someone who appears to be physically weaker makes the child feel more important or popular.
A type of strategy to prevent bullying in schools is creating policies and rules. It is important that the school creates rules and policies to prevent bullying and enforces them. A clear definition of bullying is made a component of bullying policies and rules. One example is the creation of a school mission statement.
