Looking at the past presidents in the history of the US, John Fitzgerald Kennedy is easily one of the finest considering his accomplishments. He was known for establishing the Peace Corps, launching the first man to the moon and strategizing his way through the Cuban Missile Crisis. The only president to win a Pulitzer Prize, Kennedy knocks other leaders out of the water with the amount of achievements in his single term. American's today are grateful for Kennedy’s actions during the crisis, whereas the world could have been deceased if one wrong move was made. To avoid the descent, the US placed missiles in Turkey because of its propinquity to the Soviet Union. Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Union, despised the placement of nuclear weapons so close to him. Khrushchev decided to get vengeance against Kennedy and arranged missiles in Cuba, the Soviet's new ally.
Khrushchev's main goal during the shipment of the missiles was keeping it under the radar. If Kennedy had found out about the delivery before it had made its arrival, his plan wouldn't follow through. "They even "quarantined" Cuban officers who had seen too much" (Frankel 21). Khrushchev's paranoid actions played off well for a little until the Senator of New York, Keith Keating, exposed that he believed there was a Soviet takeover in Cuba (Frankel 24). At this point everyone was just waiting to see what the Soviets were to do and Kennedy kept the worst case scenario in his head. What if this is an uprising again the US and it became offensive? It took about a month for the missiles to arrive to Cuba and as soon as Kennedy found out he immediately planned U-2's to snoop into Cuban territory. The flight brought back eight cans of clear film, showing the nuclear missile build up. The sizes of these missiles were observed to seek what the actual purpose of the weapons were. At sixty-seven feet long, it concluded that the missiles were established there to pose a threat against America (Frankel 40).
