Three walls. One toilet seat. Bars made of mild steel and a lock only accessible to men who government calls authority figures. Prison systems are known for three things: to protect the people, to punish the criminal and to rehabilitate the prisoner so that a crime will not be further committed. However, it has been causing ongoing controversy on whether or not it has been stripping away the earned rights of citizens or indeed helping them become “better” for society.

Inmates who are familiar with the prison system are less likely to abide by rules and regulations causing an increase in the rate of violence amongst one another. However, the conditions of prisons are not justified with any crime anyone has ever committed. Ironically the criminal justice systems leaves their fellow inmates oppressed.  
According to Human Rights Watch, ‘The U.S administration has taken no steps toward accountability for torture and other abuses committed by US officials in the so called “war on terror…”. An average day in the system consists of violent behavior amongst inmates, and amongst staff as well. Many altercations occur due to the various gang affiliations that are present. Along with the gang violence amongst those that have already been initiated, inmates are constantly searching for their next victim or accomplice. In some cases, you are required to be locked in a room with no human contact whatsoever. The extent of physical abuse does not compare to the mental hardships you endure during your time. For instance, solitary confinement - “the confinement of a prisoner alone in a cell for all, or nearly all, of the day with minimal environmental stimulation and minimal opportunity for social interaction” - can cause psychiatric harm. Research has shown that social interaction is crucial for ones health, as well as inconsistency in the environment. Some may argue that brief periods of isolation can be beneficial to a person’s well being, however extended isolation can not be used as a disciplinary measure because of its overall effect ones psychiatric stability.It is mind boggling that the mental health of these prisoners are swept under the carpet and not being addressed. Thankfully, reform systems are being put into place to overcome this social injustice.
