Case Study 1
The number of people with low vision is rising. In the last 20 years the number of people registered as sight impaired and severely sight impaired has almost doubled (DOH 2001)
Dealing with low vision can be difficult at any age. Having the support and care from family and all available organisations is important. At 74 years old, having a low vision assessment for the first time can be daunting, and expectations might be higher than reality.
Social and medical history, and clinical findings.
Living with a daughter and grandchildren means the emotional and physical support exists in the home. Having helped in the upbringing of the grandchildren she has always kept busy and felt important. Due to now suffering from arthritis is unable to help around the house and with the children, although they are older now, this could cause a feeling of worthlessness after being very active in their upbringing. Knowing the home situation is essential to help prioritise goals.
Diagnosing Age Related Macular Degeneration, and vision loss in the right eye means relying on the left eye which also has some vision loss, but stable with no new changes. Spectacles prescribed for near vision work no longer serve their purpose which fuels the need for a low vision assessment.
The NHS website states that “Macular degeneration develops when the macula (the part of the eye responsible for central vision) is unable to function as effectively as it used to.
It is still unclear what causes the macula to become damaged, but getting older, smoking and a family history of Age Related Macular Degeneration are known to increase the risk of developing the condition.”
Age Related Macular Degeneration is one of the main causes of vision loss in adults (RNIB) and it is important to know that they have an understanding of the condition and explanations should be said in terms they would understand.
There is no mention of any hearing problems, or any other impairment that might also affect the lifestyle other than arthritis. This is vital to know in the visual aid option process.
